About the Kingspearl
The King's Pearl Pub & Eatery is located at 71 King St., just north of the main intersection in Tiverton. The ground floor of the home has been converted into a wheelchair accessible pub and restaurant, the original hardwood floors carefully refinished and a 18’ stand-up bar installed in the parlour. Upstairs there is a spacious function room, fitted out with leather sofas and a big-screen TV.
The proprietor's of the King's Pearl are Stuart and Nancy Alexander, who were born and raised in the nearby hamlet of Glammis, where they live on a farm and work at Bruce Power.
Stuart and Nancy hope the establishment will become a local meeting place - at the crossroads - where friends and family will meet for a quick bite and to raise a glass. The full-service bar includes a variety of drafts - including some British imports - and spirits. The menu features light pub fare.
The home was tastefully converted by local contractor Garry Woods, who maintained the original character of the residence while making room for a full-scale commercial kitchen. Furnishings, such as the bar stools and harvest tables, were constructed by local Mennonite craftsmen. A large deck and patio has also been erected at the back of the establishment. The building has an interesting history and there is also a story behind the name of the new Pub & Eatery.
The stylish home was built in the early 1890's by Tiverton's first banker Joseph Grapham and has had an intriguing history. In the middle of the 20th century, the home's spacious livingroom was rented out for use as a local funeral parlour.
As for the name, "King" refers to the location - on King St. in Tiverton. There is a hand-carved statue of a king out in front of the establishment, carved out of a solid pine tree trunk by artist Peter Mogensen.
The "Pearl" in the name is a tribute to Pearl MacPherson, one of the original occupants of the home.
The home had fallen into disrepair and had remained that way until Stuart and Nancy tastefully restored and renovated it. It's officially open for business as Tiverton's new hot spot, at the crossroads.
